Amendments in the ESI Act

Minister of State of Labour and Employment, Harish Rawa, introduced Employees' State Insurance (Amendment) Bill, 2009 in the Lok Sabha. The bill seeks to provide employees covered under the ESI Scheme and their dependents with more benefits in case of sickness, maternity and employment injury.

It proposes to include an apprentice as an employee, enhancing the age limit from existing 18 years to 21 years for the purpose of giving benefits to dependents. This will enable the Central government to make rules to decide dependency of parents based on income.
