Book keeping is the recording of financial transactions that include sales, purchase, income and payments by an individual or organization. Job of a bookkeeper is common to almost all industries.  For men and women of all ages and from all backgrounds it provides outstanding career opportunities. People of all ages are becoming bookkeepers. Young people fresh from school or college can achieve a professional qualification that opens up a whole new world of business to them or may become the first step to becoming a qualified accountant. Many are mothers wanting to have a well-paid career of a bookkeeping business from home whilst still bringing up their family.

Job profile: Bookkeeper maintains complete, up-to-date and accurate records of accounts and financial agreements. Bookkeepers are required to verify and enter information into the journals and ledgers or into a computer, on the basis of which they periodically balance the books and compile reports and financial statements.

In addition, bookkeepers may also balance cheque books with monthly bank statements, prepare and make bank deposits, fill bills etc. The book keeper is responsible for ensuring that all transactions are recorded in the correct day book, supplier’s ledger, customer ledger and general ledger. The bookkeeper brings the book to the trial balance stage.

How bookkeeping has changed over the years: With the arrival of computers and accounting software, bookkeeping errors have decreased and efficiency has increased. In large companies, the bookkeeping function is likely to be divided among a number of clerking specialists, such as accounts payable clerks, accounts receivable clerks, payroll clerks and accounting clerks, each of whom use the accounting software to carry out their specific responsibilities.

Education and training requirements: There are certificate courses and diplomas in accounting and bookkeeping to qualify as bookkeepers.  Also, a degree in commerce would be enough, for it covers all that a bookkeeper would be required to do.  Since all the accounting work is nowadays carried out using computers, working knowledge of computers is very important.
